Women and Beer in Scotland with Ardtornish Estate and the Whitehouse Restaurant

Posted: 23rd October 2012 at 10:11 am

Did you know that  Sixteenth-century Aberdeen boasted 150 brewers,– all women  known as “broustaris” or alewives.  Three of Scotland’s leading brewsters are coming to Ardtonish to talk about their beer:

Tuggy Delap set up Loch Fyne Beers and shot straight to glory with a gold brewing award within nine months of starting.

Petra Wetzel created WEST.   The only brewery  in the UK to abide strictly by the ancient German brewing quality standard, the Reinheitsgebot.

Catherine Maxwell Stuart’s brewery is a revived tradition, long part of the domestic economy of her world-famous Traquair House in the Scottish Borders.

There will also be beer tastings and beer-inspired cuisine by the team behind the increasingly celebrated Whitehouse Restaurant, Lochaline.

Cost £120 for the weekend including all food and drink!  More details can be found at www.ardtornish.co.uk

Double Celebration

Well we are the proud winners of the Highlands and Islands Restaurant of the Year 2012.  Jane went to the awrds ceremony on friday and came back with a lovely glass thing that you can all come and see in the Whitehouse.  And then on Sunday we dicovered that we were runners up in the Observer Food Awards Restaurant of the Year along side the Kitchen in Edinburgh so we are all a bit dazed and thrilled.  Mike and Lee's cooking certainly more than deserve these accolades.

Elderberry jus

I have just been talking to Mike about tonight's menu.  He will be cooking Morvern venison in Pedro Ximenes' sherry with an elderberry jus.  Sounds delicious to me and then he said he would also be cooking pine infused wood pidgeon with chorizo.  A difficult choice.
